French government unveils plan to support struggling organic farming
According to Agence Bio, organically farmed land in France decreased in 2023 for the first time, raising concerns about the future of organic farming. Although the number of certified organic farmers increased by 2%, the conversion rate to organic farming continued to decline, while deconversion trend persisted.
‘Catastrophic situation’
The decline in consumer spending, confusion over product labels, and inflation have impacted the organic sector, leading to a decrease in the organic share of the French diet. In 2023, consumer spending on organic products remained stable in value terms, but decreased in volume, indicating a shift in consumer preferences.
