The committee suggests removing caste prefixes from school names, excluding caste markers from attendance registers, implementing a ‘Code of Conduct’ for school staff, and appointing School Welfare Officers and counselors.
The urgency for such measures became evident after a disturbing incident where a Dalit student was attacked by classmates from a dominant community. The committee emphasizes the need for a Code of Discipline for students, prohibiting any display of caste-related symbols, and enforcing strict disciplinary actions for non-compliance.
Furthermore, the committee proposes the enactment of special legislation to promote social inclusion and eradicate caste discrimination in the long run. Other recommendations include periodic teacher transfers, impartial officer postings, and syllabus reviews to foster values of social justice and equality in education.
To monitor and facilitate these reforms, the committee suggests establishing a Social Justice Monitoring Committee, seating students alphabetically, and creating support systems like trained counselors and grievance boxes in schools.
