US journalist Evan Gershkovich is set to stand trial on espionage charges behind closed doors in Russia’s Yekaterinburg on June 26. The Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested in March 2023 while covering a story and has been held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison since.
Accused of working for the CIA, Gershkovich faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty. Both the United States and his employer have vehemently denied the charges, calling them baseless and outrageous.
Russians and Americans are in discussions about a potential prisoner exchange involving Gershkovich, following a pattern of detaining individuals for political leverage. Gershkovich, known for his journalism work and conviviality, is a well-liked member of the press corps.
