Maldives to reconsider ban on Israeli passports

Maldives to reconsider ban on Israeli passports

Amidst public outrage over the Israeli Occupation’s aggression against Gaza, the Maldives government initially banned “Israelis” from entering the country. However, Attorney General Ahmed Usham has raised concerns about the impact of this decision on Palestinians holding “Israeli” passports.

Usham highlighted the complexities of enforcing a complete ban on “Israeli” passports and emphasized the need for careful consideration. While the government’s stance remains unchanged, there are significant issues that need to be addressed, especially regarding the millions of Palestinians with Israeli passports.

Currently, there is no new legislation in the Maldivian parliament to enforce the ban. Usham proposed amending the existing bill during committee discussions instead of presenting a new bill.

By taking a cautious approach and reviewing the existing legislation, the government aims to navigate the challenges posed by the ban without further legislative action.
