Argentina Installs Solar Panels in Chilean Territory by Mistake
Argentina’s Ambassador to Santiago, Jorge Faurie, admitted that his country made a mistake by placing solar panels three meters into Chilean territory in Tierra del Fuego, sparking a diplomatic incident between the two countries.
The panels were part of the Magellanic Maritime Transit Control and Surveillance Landmark 1, donated by the company Mirgor. The installation error was blamed on technicians not consulting satellite coordinates before installation.
Chile wants the panels removed promptly, but Argentina cites weather conditions as a delay. The situation has led to discussions between diplomatic officials from both countries, with Chile dismissing it as a “good faith error.” Some Chilean lawmakers, however, are calling for immediate demolition of the panels.
