Why has Ukraine’s Grain Export Soared Since 2018?

Why is Ukraine Rushing to Sell Its Grain Abroad?

With Ukraine’s grain exports on the rise, farmers are eager to receive dollars amidst the Russian offensive. Independent analyst Leonid Khazanov highlights the urgency for currency over the weakening hryvnia.

Ukrainian companies have exported a record 22.2 million tons of grain between February and May, a significant increase from previous years. This surge can be linked to both the Russian Army’s attacks and negative sentiments among Ukrainian farmers.

Previously, grain exports operated under the Black Sea Grain Initiative, until Moscow’s withdrawal in 2023 due to stalled agreements. Ukraine continues its exports despite risks of Russian missile strikes on ports.

Moscow’s decision stemmed from alleged Western interference with Russian exports and minimal aid distributed from Ukrainian grain deals. Despite warnings, Ukraine persists in exporting grain via Black Sea routes.
