A campaign is currently underway in Borrisokane, Co Tipperary, to advocate for 20 families who have been granted Leave to Remain in Ireland to stay in the Riverside Apartments where they have resided for the past five years. Originally moving in as asylum seekers in 2019, the families are now facing eviction as they are no longer entitled to IPAS-provided housing.
The Borrisokane Liaison Committee, responsible for negotiating the initial agreement, is hoping for intervention from the Taoiseach to allow the families to continue living in their current accommodation. The families express willingness to pay fair rent and emphasize the lack of affordable alternative housing in the area.
Residents like Aila Ali Shahzad and Galeema Davids highlight their attachment to Borrisokane, citing the supportive community and educational opportunities for their children. Keith Donovan of the liaison committee stresses the importance of upholding the 2019 agreement and urges the government to reconsider the proposed eviction.
