Preparing for Natural Disasters in Karnataka: A Comprehensive Approach
In a proactive move, the state government of Karnataka has identified 1,698 villages at risk of riverine floods and 1,351 villages vulnerable to landslides. With a data-driven approach based on historic patterns and geographic analysis, officials are collaborating across departments to pre-empt potential disasters.
The focus is on the Krishna Basin, Cauvery Basin, and rivers flowing westwards, where hundreds of villages are categorized as ‘very high-risk’ or ‘moderate risk’. Particularly in Kalaburagi district, 238 villages are identified as high-risk areas.
Government data from 2022 reveals the impact of heavy rainfall, resulting in loss of lives, livestock, and infrastructure damage. To mitigate future risks, the Revenue Department has laid out strategies, including constant monitoring of water levels, strengthening of buildings, and deployment of response units.
With a heightened concern for flash floods, especially in urban centers like Bengaluru, the Fire and Emergency Services Department is gearing up with coordinated efforts and well-equipped stations to ensure a rapid and effective response.
As monsoon approaches, the government’s thorough preparedness showcases a commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of the citizens of Karnataka.
