Quiet Eid al-Adha festivities this year.

Every year since 1976, Mallam Kabiru Tudun Wada has traditionally slaughtered a ram in celebration of Eid al-Adha. However, this year he, like many other Muslims in Nigeria, is unable to afford one due to the country’s economic crisis.

Eid al-Adha is a time when Muslims commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son and traditionally slaughter an animal for a feast with family and friends. However, inflation in Nigeria has made the cost of a ram soar beyond reach for many.

Some individuals, like Mallam Auwal Yakasai, have resorted to sharing the cost of slaughtering an animal with friends to make the sacrifice on Eid. While Islamic clerics emphasize the importance of this tradition, many Nigerians are prioritizing basic necessities over luxury items like animals for sacrifice.

The Nigerian government is working to improve the economy, but for now, many are hoping for better days ahead where they can once again participate in Eid traditions without financial strain.
