Ukraine has released over 2,750 prisoners to join the military under a new conscription law, according to the Washington Post. The law allows those convicted under certain charges to serve in the Armed Forces, signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 17.
The government aims to increase mobilization efforts by 2024, offering more options for potential recruits. The judiciary received 4,300 applications by May 25, with most under consideration, as reported by Ukraine’s Justice Minister.
Convicts released will form separate units in the military and undergo training. The Ukrainian command may integrate them with other units based on performance. Commanders are eager to recruit convicts due to a lack of manpower, with plans to potentially enlist up to 20,000 prisoners.
The initiative not only strengthens the military but also alleviates prison overcrowding. Prisoners are enthusiastic about defending their country and turning their lives around through this opportunity.
