The EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness has stated that she will not retire if she does not secure another term as an EU Commissioner. Speculation has risen that a Fianna Fáil candidate may be proposed for the role, with Tánaiste Micheál Martin making the nomination.
During an interview on RTÉ’s This Week, Ms McGuinness mentioned that she still has a lot to offer. She expressed that while she does not expect to be nominated as Ireland’s next commissioner, she would be honored if she were. The former Fine Gael MEP emphasized the importance of Ireland having a strong presence within the EU, considering the country’s 50-year membership.
Ms McGuinness will continue her role as EU Commissioner until October while acknowledging that she has no expectation or entitlement to a nomination. She highlighted her good working relationship with party leaders and her dedication to her role on the Financial Services portfolio.
Additionally, she addressed concerns over Irish MEPs not supporting Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election as President of the European Commission due to the situation in Gaza. Despite this, she commended von der Leyen’s work and expressed her confidence in her abilities on the matter.
