The Federal Government, through the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, is taking steps to empower Nigerian airlines with direct access to international routes, specifically to the United States and South America. In a YouTube interview with O’tega Ogra titled “Unfiltered: The Big Interview,” Keyamo highlighted the government’s efforts to enable local airlines to operate direct flights to these regions, aiming to increase competition and lower ticket prices.
Keyamo emphasized the importance of Bilateral Air Services Agreements (BASA) and reciprocal rights to facilitate access to these lucrative routes. By enforcing BASA and ensuring respect for Nigerian carriers, the government aims to improve the competitiveness of local airlines in the global market.
Furthermore, the government is working to enhance the capacity of local airlines by providing access to aircraft through leasing arrangements, similar to established international carriers. This strategic approach seeks to support the growth and expansion of Nigerian airlines on an international scale, ultimately benefiting both the industry and passengers.
