Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former leader of Myanmar, has had no contact with her family since her imprisonment three years ago. In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, her son Kim Aris revealed that they had only received one letter from her in January and no communication since her transfer from prison in April.
Following a coup in February 2021, Suu Kyi was ousted and arrested by the military junta, who later sentenced her to 33 years in prison. In 2023, her sentence was reduced by six years, but her family has not been informed of her current location. Aris expressed concern for her health, as she was reportedly suffering from severe toothache and eating difficulties.
Despite sending her medication, Suu Kyi’s sons did not receive a response to their efforts. The political situation in Myanmar remains volatile, with rebel groups engaging in violent resistance against the ruling junta. The family continues to advocate for Suu Kyi’s release and well-being amid ongoing uncertainty.
