‘International Insolence’ Lithuanian-Style? MPs Approve Relocating Soviet Soldiers’ Remains

The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have faced a wave of vandalism against Soviet monuments, prompting Russia to criticize their actions as harmful attempts to distort history. In Lithuania, parliament has passed amendments to relocate Soviet soldiers’ burial sites, considering them as venues promoting banned ideology.
Initiated by residents of Siauliai, Lithuania, the move aims to relocate 52 soldiers’ remains from the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul entrance. The surge in monument vandalism coincided with Russia’s military operations in 2022, sparking tensions. The Estonian government’s demolition of Soviet monuments drew ire from Russia, highlighting a perceived bias in favor of Nazi memorials.
These actions have been condemned by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as “international insolence,” while Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned of damaging consequences. The Baltic states’ decision to erase Soviet history has raised concerns about historical revisionism and its impact on regional relations.
