Koppal: The Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha is reigniting the demand for separate religion status for Lingayats, six years after the proposal was rejected by the Union government. General secretary S M Jamdar announced plans to submit a memorandum to the state and central governments, emphasizing the need for recognition.
Addressing reporters at an executive committee meeting, Jamdar highlighted the misconception that led to the rejection. He argued that the concern over Dalits and tribes losing benefits is invalid, as demonstrated by Dalits joining other religions while still enjoying SC/ST benefits. Jamdar, a retired IAS officer, clarified the distinction between Veerashaivas and Lingayats.
Established five to six years ago, the Mahasabha is committed to the cause and will revitalize its efforts through district unit elections. The relentless pursuit of separate religion status for Lingayats remains a top priority for the organization.
