Gandhi, Ambedkar statues relocated and inaugurated at Prerna Sthal

In an attempt to create a dedicated space to showcase the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar, and 13 other national founders, the Indian Parliament recently inaugurated Prerna Sthal amidst controversy. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar led the inauguration ceremony, which saw the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Deputy Rajya Sabha Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, and Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju.

Defending the decision to relocate the statues, outgoing Speaker Om Birla emphasized that the move followed discussions with various stakeholders and aimed to enhance the dissemination of information about the leaders. However, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the decision, pointing out the lack of consultation with the Parliament’s Committee on Portraits and Statues.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat explained that the repositioning of statues was part of an action plan to provide visitors with a more convenient and informative experience at the Parliament Complex. Prerna Sthal will utilize modern technology to share the inspiring stories and contributions of the nation’s freedom fighters.
