The European Union has taken a significant step towards opening accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova. The Belgian presidency of the EU’s Council announced that a framework for negotiations has been agreed upon in principle. This decision comes after the EU voted to initiate accession talks with the two countries in December, following their formal applications to join the union in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The next crucial step is for EU ministers to formally approve the decision at their meeting on June 21, with the Dutch parliament also needing to give its consent. The Belgian presidency plans to call the first intergovernmental conferences on June 25. Despite potential obstacles ahead, European Council President Charles Michel has reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and Moldova on their path to membership.
