Before being elected as Speaker, Didiza often stood in for other officials like Baleka Mbete, Thandi Modise, and Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. The ANC nominated her to replace Mapisa-Nqakula, who stepped down following corruption allegations.
Mapisa-Nqakula faced accusations of accepting bribes while serving as defence minister. Despite denying any wrongdoing, she resigned amidst the scandal.
