Andrei Turchak, secretary of United Russia, the country’s ruling political party, submitted his resignation on June 15, demoted by Russian President Vladimir Putin to serve as governor of the Altai Republic. Dmitry Medvedev, chair of United Russia, accepted the resignation and appointed Vladimir Yakushev as acting secretary.
Turchak, previously favored by Putin, supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and organized illegal referendums in occupied territories. Putin has reshuffled high-ranking officials, including Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s reassignment.
