Recent British opinion polls paint a daunting picture for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party, with one pollster even warning of “electoral extinction” in the upcoming July 4 election. The polls, released in the middle of the campaign, reveal a significant lead for Keir Starmer’s Labour Party, with the Conservatives losing ground.
Sunak’s decision to call for an early election surprised many, as the country continues to grapple with the impacts of high inflation. Market research by Savanta shows a 25-point lead for Labour, the largest since Liz Truss’s tenure as prime minister. The results suggest a dire outcome for the Conservative Party, according to political research director Chris Hopkins.
A separate poll by Survation predicts a historic low of 72 seats for the Conservatives in the House of Commons, with Labour poised to win 456 seats. Meanwhile, a third poll by Opinium also indicates a significant lead for Labour, with Reform UK making headway as a right-wing alternative.
As the campaign intensifies and postal ballots are set to be distributed, these polls indicate a challenging road ahead for the Conservative Party in the upcoming election.
