South African President Cyril Ramaphosa secured a second term through a last-minute coalition agreement with the Democratic Alliance, his long-time rival, as the new Parliament convened. The coalition, termed as a government of national unity, also includes two smaller parties, marking the first national coalition government in South Africa’s history.
Following the ANC’s loss of its 30-year majority in the recent election, the agreement was necessary to navigate the political landscape. Although differing ideologies may pose challenges, parties have pledged to work together for the country’s benefit.
DA leader John Steenhuisen confirmed the agreement, expressing commitment to collaborate with the ANC in governing South Africa. With a clear majority in Parliament, Ramaphosa’s reelection is now expected.
The session, disrupted by a fire that gutted the National Assembly building, culminated in the historic coalition that prioritizes national interest across political divides. Despite initial reluctance, other parties like the Inkatha Freedom Party and the Patriotic Alliance joined the unity government.
This unity government, echoing Mandela’s approach to inclusivity post-apartheid, signifies a new chapter in South Africa’s political landscape, heralding a collaborative effort to steer the nation forward.
