Amid controversy surrounding alleged attempts to influence the judiciary, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi assured that he has not faced any pressure in his 15-year tenure. He stated that while there are “unseen matters” mentioned on social media, no direct pressure has been exerted on him or his colleagues. This comes in the wake of Lahore High Court Chief Justice Malik Shehzad Ahmed Khan voicing concerns over external interference in judicial matters.
In a startling revelation, six Islamabad High Court judges penned a letter to the Supreme Judicial Council detailing attempts to pressure judges through abduction, torture of relatives, and secret surveillance. Following this, a full court meeting was convened by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, leading to the formation of an inquiry commission. However, ex-CJP Tassaduq Hussain Jillani recused himself from leading the commission, urging Justice Isa to resolve the issues internally.
The Peshawar High Court also proposed laws to protect judges from harassment and intimidation by intelligence agencies. This saga sheds light on the challenges faced by the judiciary in upholding independence and integrity against external influences.\
