The Pontiff warned that humanity would lose hope if people were stripped of their ability to make choices, instead becoming dependent on machines.
Calling for proper human control over AI programs, Pope Francis stressed that human dignity hinges on this control. He specifically urged G7 leaders to ban the use of lethal autonomous weapon systems, asserting that machines should never have the power to take human lives. The Pontiff proposed the creation of global ethical principles for AI development, known as “algor-ethics,” that would gain support from various sectors.
While acknowledging the benefits of AI in facilitating access to knowledge and scientific progress, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of directing AI towards the greater good of humanity. He called on politicians to create conditions that allow AI to be used responsibly and effectively. The Pontifical Academy for Life has been actively involved in promoting ethical standards for AI development, aligning with the Pope’s concerns.
