President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr of the Philippines has taken a stand against China’s claims in the resource-rich South China Sea, strengthening ties with the US and asserting the country’s right to explore the waters for energy resources following a legal victory in 2016.
Despite this, China has continued its presence in the area, leading to confrontations with Philippine vessels, including the use of water cannon and collisions that have injured Filipino troops.
Recent Chinese coastguard rules and incursions in the South China Sea have drawn criticism from the Philippines, as well as the Group of Seven bloc for their “dangerous” activities in the region.
The South China Sea is a crucial waterway with overlapping claims from various countries, posing a risk of broader conflicts involving the US and allies due to its strategic importance for trade, energy resources, and fisheries.
As tensions escalate, both China and the US are asserting their interests in the South China Sea, raising concerns about potential military confrontations in the region.
