The Lagos State Government has confirmed that the outbreak of severe gastroenteritis affecting multiple local government areas (LGAs) is due to a cholera outbreak. The Ministry of Health spokesperson disclosed that laboratory investigations revealed the presence of cholera subtype 0-1, associated with more severe disease. The outbreak has caused 350 suspected cases, 17 confirmed cases, and 15 fatalities so far, with densely populated neighborhoods being most affected.

The government has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre to address the increasing cases. Efforts include distributing Oral Rehydration Solutions, public health education campaigns, and prepositioning cholera kits in health facilities. Residents are urged to adhere to precautionary measures and seek treatment promptly. Cooperation with health authorities and participation in sanitation activities are essential to prevent further transmission, especially with the upcoming Eid-al-Adha celebration.
