The high court of Karnataka has taken a significant step by registering a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the alarming number of elephants dying due to electrocution in the state.
Following the death of an elephant named Ashwathama, the court, led by Chief Justice N V Anjaria and Justice K V Aravind, expressed concern over the negligence in ensuring the safety of elephants and wildlife.
The court highlighted the need for proper safety measures to prevent further tragedies, referencing the loss of 35 elephants to electrocution from January 2021 to June 2024. Senior advocate Puttige R Ramesh has been appointed as Amicus Curiae to assist the court in this matter.
The bench directed the state government and authorities to provide information on steps taken and proposed to safeguard elephants and wildlife. They emphasized the importance of holding responsible parties accountable for such tragic incidents.
