Global Peace Summit: Day One’s Opening Salvoes

Leaders from 100 countries and organizations, including 57 heads of state, gathered at the Bürgenstock resort for a summit hosted by Swiss President Viola Amherd and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky expressed the universal desire for security, integrity, and peace in his opening speech, emphasizing the need to bring an end to the war against Ukraine.

The summit aimed to develop an action plan to present to Russia, with the ultimate goal of achieving a fair resolution to the conflict. Working groups were formed to address key topics such as nuclear security, freedom of shipping, food safety, and humanitarian concerns.

During the plenary session, influential figures like Ursula von der Leyen, Kamala Harris, and other world leaders shared their perspectives on the crisis. Calls for a just and lasting peace, support for Ukraine, and condemnation of Russia’s actions were common themes throughout the session.

The global community’s commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and repelling aggression was evident, with promises of aid and support from countries like Italy and Croatia. Overall, the summit set the stage for meaningful discussions and tangible actions to address the ongoing conflict.
