François Hollande: final piece in left alliance
François Hollande, former French president and member of the Parti Socialiste, guest on TF1's 8pm news program, Paris, June 13, 2024.

If just a week ago, left-wing leaders would have never imagined receiving François Hollande’s support. Yet, the former French president played a crucial role in uniting the left parties of La France Insoumise, the Socialists, the Communists, and the Greens to form the Nouveau Front Populaire alliance for the upcoming elections.

The Nouveau Front Populaire aims to present a united front against the Rassemblement National (RN) in the elections. Hollande emphasized the importance of unity over differences and urged support for any non-far-right candidate in the run-off votes.

Raphaël Glucksmann, the lead Socialist candidate, expressed support for the alliance to prevent the RN from gaining power. The fight against the far right serves as a unifying factor for the left parties, including Hollande and Glucksmann.

Discrediting Macron’s rhetoric

Hollande and Glucksmann’s endorsement of the Nouveau Front Populaire reflects a tactical move to maintain the balance of power within the left. The alliance signifies a shift in the left’s dynamics, challenging Mélenchon’s previous dominance.
