Amid a severe water crisis in Delhi, the Delhi Congress organized ‘matka phod’ protests across the city on Saturday. Members smashed earthen pots in symbolic protest against the water shortage.
The protests began at 10 am in all 280 blocks of Delhi. Protesters carried earthen pots on their heads and Congress flags, chanting slogans against the Delhi government and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal before smashing the pots on the ground.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav, who participated in the protests, called for a special assembly session to address the water scarcity issue. He criticized the government for failing to take effective measures, leading people to rely on water tankers.
Water Minister Atishi attributed the declining water production in Delhi to Haryana’s alleged failure to release Delhi’s share of water. She shared data showing a decrease in water production from 1,002 MGD on June 6 to 939 MGD on June 13.
The ongoing blame game between the AAP government and BJP-ruled Haryana continues as Delhi residents grapple with the water crisis.
