In a recent UN Security Council meeting, Geng Shuang, China’s deputy representative to the UN, urged Ukraine and Russia to engage in peace talks promptly. This call comes ahead of the Global Peace Summit set to take place on June 15-16 in Switzerland, initiated by Ukraine but excluding Russia.

Russian President Putin laid out conditions for negotiations, demanding Ukrainian troop withdrawal from certain regions and recognition of Russia’s annexation. China’s proposed peace plan from February 2023 received varied responses from different parties involved.

Despite Ukraine’s invitation, China declined to attend the upcoming peace summit, prompting criticism from Ukrainian President Zelensky. China has been promoting its alternative peace plan. Zelensky’s 10-point peace formula, backed by Western allies, has been a point of discussion leading up to the anticipated event.
