Can Ukraine achieve peace in the Swiss Alps?

Switzerland is currently hosting a “summit on peace” with the goal of initiating a peace process to end the war in Ukraine. The summit boasts representation from over 90 countries, with notable absences including Russia. With recent comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin suggesting a long road to compromise, the expectations for significant progress at the summit remain uncertain.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Bürgenstock, the summit aims to bring together global leaders and officials to discuss their visions for a just and enduring peace in Ukraine. While the agenda has been narrowed down from Ukraine’s original 10-point peace plan to focus on food security, nuclear safety, and humanitarian issues, including the return of displaced Ukrainian children, the discussions are vital in laying the groundwork for a potential future peace summit involving Russia.

Despite challenges posed by Russia’s absence and their recent demands, the Swiss government remains optimistic about the outcomes of the summit, emphasizing the importance of continued diplomatic efforts towards peace.
