Today marked the 32nd anniversary of the martyrdom of 29 persons of Serbian nationality in Buna, near Mostar. Family members of the victims gathered to honor their loved ones, many of whom are still missing, with a ceremony involving throwing roses into the Buna river and lighting candles. Unfortunately, no one has been held accountable for this heinous crime.
In addition to the tribute in Buna, a commemoration took place in Mostar where the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, which was set on fire on this day in 1992, is still undergoing restoration. The day’s events continued in Nevesinje with a laying of flowers at the Freedom Monument and a visit to the Memorial Room, as well as the laying of flowers at the Memorial Ossuary.
It is important to remember and honor the victims of such tragedies to ensure that justice is served and that their memories live on. Let us never forget the lives lost and the families forever affected by these senseless acts of violence.
