Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the tragic events that took place in Pionirska Street in Višegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over 140 women, children, and elderly individuals were horrifically burned alive in what became known as the “live bonfires” on June 14, 1992, and later in Bikavac on June 27, 1992. The youngest victim, a two-day-old baby, perished alongside their mother.
Zehra Turjačanin is the sole survivor of this heinous crime and bravely testified about the atrocities before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The act committed by the “Avengers” paramilitary group, led by Milan and Sredoj Lukić, stands as one of the most horrendous war crimes during the Bosnian War.
Milan and Sredoje Lukić were convicted and sentenced to 27 years in prison for their role in the Pionirska Street massacre. More recently, Radomir Šušnjar was extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina and received a 20-year prison sentence for his involvement in the killings. Let us remember the victims and continue to seek justice for those affected by this tragic event.\
