The Pentagon stated, “The USS Helena is on a routine port visit in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as part of its global maritime security mission.” Pentagon Spokeswoman Sabrina Singh reassured that the Russian mission does not pose a threat to the US.
The Russian convoy in Cuba includes the frigate Admiral Gorshkov and the nuclear-powered Kazan submarine, sparking tensions with the US. This event is reminiscent of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, highlighting the fragile relationship between the two superpowers.
