In a recent statement, Washington’s top diplomat in Taipei expressed concern over China’s “provocative” actions in the region, warning of the potential for an accidental conflict. Sandra Oudkirk, the outgoing director of the American Institute in Taiwan, emphasized the United States’ commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas.
Oudkirk urged China to avoid coercive or provocative actions, highlighting the inherent dangers of such behavior. With the U.S. serving as Taiwan’s key supporter and arms supplier, tensions have risen as China continues to exert pressure on the democratic island.
As Taiwan faces delays in receiving arms orders from the U.S. due to supply chain issues during the pandemic, Oudkirk reassured that deliveries are underway and emphasized the importance of Taiwan’s defense capabilities.
Looking ahead, Oudkirk’s successor, Raymond Greene, is poised to continue U.S. engagement in Taiwan, bringing a wealth of experience and familiarity with the region. Despite ongoing challenges, the U.S. remains committed to supporting Taiwan’s sovereignty and security amidst rising tensions.
