Sydney church terrorism suspect now faces charges for stabbing bishop and priest

Article Summary

A 16-year-old boy in Sydney is facing additional charges for a terrorist act after stabbing a bishop in a church. The boy, whose name has not been disclosed, was arrested at the scene on April 15. He is now charged with wounding with intent to murder Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and wounding with intent to cause harm to Rev. Isaac Royel. Prosecutors have found thousands of images and videos on the boy’s phone that could be used as evidence. The boy did not apply for bail and remains in custody.

Police have also arrested six other boys connected to the 16-year-old, all allegedly adhering to a violent extremist ideology. They planned to buy guns and attack Jewish people after the bishop was stabbed. The riot outside the church led to 51 police officers injured and 104 police vehicles damaged. The prosecution expects to provide final evidence to defense lawyers within six weeks.
