Two Moscow investigators have been charged with extorting an equivalent of $181 million in cryptocurrency from suspects. A Moscow region court is set to hear a case involving the biggest bribe in Russia’s modern history. The suspects, officers with the Russian Investigative Committee’s Moscow district office, are accused of soliciting a bribe from suspects in a 2022 cybercrime case related to the Infraud Organization.
Major Marat Tambiev, one of the suspects, demanded 2,718 bitcoins from hackers involved in cybercrimes. Another suspect, investigator Kristina Lyakhovenko, illegally took electronic data storage devices seized by law enforcement and handed them over to Tambiev, allowing him to transfer the bitcoins to his crypto-wallets.
The cybercrime syndicate members reported the bribe to the Russian Federal Security Service, leading to Tambiev’s arrest in March 2022. The Infraud Organization, founded in 2010, was a global cyber fraud enterprise prosecuted by US authorities, resulting in losses worth $530 million.
