Republicans in defense bill target Gaza pier

Republicans in Congress are targeting President Joe Biden’s Gaza pier project, citing concerns about rising costs and risks to American soldiers. A proposed amendment to the fiscal 2025 National Defense Authorization Act seeks to block funding for the construction, maintenance, or repair of the pier off the coast of Gaza.

Republican lawmakers, including Congresswoman Nancy Mace and Congressman Warren Earl Davidson, argue that the project is a waste of taxpayer dollars and exposes US soldiers to potential dangers in Gaza. The Biden administration introduced the pier plan earlier this year to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza but has faced criticism for its high cost and perceived lack of strategic focus.

While the administration maintains that no US soldiers are on the ground in Gaza, there are air defense systems and guided-missile destroyers supporting the pier in the Eastern Mediterranean. Concerns about terrorist attacks on US personnel working on the project have raised further alarm among Republicans.

With the 2025 NDAA up for consideration, Republican lawmakers are emphasizing the need to prioritize American interests and avoid entanglements in the Middle East. The project’s logistical challenges, including adverse weather conditions causing temporary dismantling, have added to existing criticisms of the initiative.
