Panyaza Lesufi is on track to become the next Gauteng premier if the ANC retains power after ongoing coalition talks. The ANC recently announced its premier candidates after conducting interviews earlier in the week.
The list includes Phophi Ramathuba for Limpopo, Zamani Saul for the Northern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane for the Eastern Cape, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae for the Free State, Mandla Ndlovu for Mpumalanga, and Lazarus “Lazzy” Mokgosi for North West. Interestingly, Letsoha-Mathae will replace the incumbent Mxolisi Dukwana in the Free State.
The selection process involved thorough questioning on key issues such as ethical leadership, development, human rights, and more. The ANC officials, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, oversaw the interviews, which were commended for their impartiality.
The ANC is also considering supporting an IFP candidate in KwaZulu-Natal, following an agreement in national unity talks. Former premiers Dukwana and Mtsweni-Tsipane are awaiting redeployment.
