This weekend, Switzerland will be hosting world leaders in an attempt to kickstart peace talks for Ukraine, despite Russia’s absence. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not want Russia involved in the talks, and the Swiss did not extend an invitation to Moscow, although they hope the country will eventually join the process.
The summit is largely symbolic, showcasing Kyiv’s strength against its more powerful adversary. The main goal is to find a way for the two countries to de-escalate the conflict that has resulted in massive economic losses and numerous casualties.
Over 90 delegations will be attending, including leaders from France, Poland, Japan, the UK, Germany, Canada, and the US. However, notable absences include President Joe Biden and China, a key ally of Russia. The discussions will focus on nuclear safety, humanitarian aid, and food security, rather than the more contentious issues directly related to the conflict.
The summit aims to provide momentum for Ukraine and reaffirm support from its allies, setting the stage for future peace negotiations and potential resolution of the ongoing conflict.
