When tensions ran high in the Italian parliament over plans to grant regions more autonomy, a physical brawl broke out triggering comparisons to the days of fascism. The dispute stemmed from Deputy Leonardo Donno attempting to symbolically protest the autonomy plans by tying an Italian flag around a minister’s neck. This led to chaos as colleagues of the minister swarmed Donno, resulting in a free-for-all involving 20 men and injuries that required hospitalization.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation from political leaders and dominated headlines in Italian newspapers. Critics pointed to the dangerous example set by elected officials while some accused Donno of provocation and faking injuries. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stressed the need for lawmakers to uphold a higher standard of behavior, asserting that violence has no place in politics.
The proposal for increased autonomy has also raised concerns about potential cuts to public services in struggling regions. This is not the first time that such chaotic scenes have unfolded in the Italian parliament, further underscoring the need for civility and respect in political discourse.
