Furious behind-the-scenes talks unfolded late into Thursday night with President Cyril Ramaphosa at the center, expected to be re-elected as South Africa’s president for a second term. Insiders believe he is the right man, at the right time for the job.

The ANC national executive committee (NEC) convened with a focus on a government of national unity (GNU). Secretary-general Fikile Mbalula reiterated the ANC’s commitment to this goal despite criticism from some opposition parties like the EFF, who claim the ANC is leaning towards white parties.

“To us, it doesn’t matter whether the cat is black or white. Fundamentally, the question is how do we move the country forward,” Mbalula told journalists after the NEC meeting in Cape Town.
