Cuban troubadour Silvio Rodriguez, known as the poetic voice of the Cuban Revolution, has released a new album after three years. The 77-year-old musician reflects on the changes in Cuba since his revolutionary songs inspired millions in the 1960s and 1970s.
As Cuba faces its worst economic crisis in decades, Rodriguez acknowledges the harsh reality, expressing concern for the inflation, hunger, and growing emigration plaguing the island. His new album, “Queria saber” (I Wanted to Know), features songs that lament the disillusionment with the current state of Cuba.
Despite his critique of the crisis, Rodriguez remains loyal to some revolutionary principles like universal healthcare and education. He continues to admire Fidel Castro, whom he supported during the revolution as a literacy teacher and militiaman.
Rodriguez’s music, filled with powerful metaphors, has earned him fame worldwide, yet he humbly sees himself as a result of his work. His songs strive to keep people company, offering solace and reflection to listeners.
