Gig workers in China, including delivery crews, internet writers, and live-streaming hosts, are facing challenges such as declining pay and longer hours due to economic constraints. The government, particularly the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), is intensifying its efforts to build party unity among these workers to enhance their well-being and security.
The SAMR plans to recruit party members among delivery workers as “part-time social supervisors” to ensure safety and report any issues promptly. These supervisors will be responsible for grassroots governance and contribute to maintaining security. Additionally, the establishment of mobile party cells and branches will help protect the rights of the delivery crews and improve their working conditions.
With a growing number of workers entering the gig economy, job opportunities are scarce, especially for young people. The SAMR estimates that around 12 million workers are serving China’s gig economy, with an additional 84 million employed under new types of employment.
Overall, government initiatives aim to support and regulate the gig economy to address labor protection issues and provide opportunities for workers in a challenging economic environment.
