The visit coincides with the Dalai Lama’s upcoming trip to the US for medical treatment, although his schedule remains uncertain. US lawmakers have regularly visited Dharamsala to show support for the Dalai Lama’s advocacy for Tibetan autonomy, a move strongly opposed by China.
The delegation’s visit aligns with a visit by top Biden administration officials to India, aiming to strengthen US-India relations amidst tensions with China. Despite inquiries, there has been no confirmation of any official meetings with the Dalai Lama by US officials.
Historically, the Dalai Lama has met with US officials, though President Biden has not done so since taking office. Such engagements risk upsetting China, which opposes any interaction with the Dalai Lama by foreign officials.
