UNSC calls for halt to el-Fasher siege in Darfur | Conflict Update

UNSC Approves Resolution to Halt Violence in Sudan

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has passed a resolution urging Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end the siege in el-Fasher, North Darfur, and cease hostilities in the region. The resolution, supported by 14 members with Russia abstaining, expresses concern over the escalating violence and ethnically motivated attacks by the RSF.

The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, has resulted in thousands of casualties and millions displaced. The resolution calls for the protection of civilians in el-Fasher, allowing their safe exit from the besieged area. It emphasizes the need for de-escalation and dialogue to resolve the conflict sustainably.

International organizations have raised alarms about the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, with blocked roads hindering aid delivery and threatening famine. The resolution also highlights the ICC’s investigation into alleged war crimes in Darfur, a region marred by historical atrocities.

By advocating for peace and accountability, the UNSC aims to bring stability and justice to Sudan’s troubled regions.
