Ukraine’s wheat exports for the upcoming marketing year are expected to hit a decade-low of 13 million metric tons, as reported by the U.S. Agriculture Department. The report also forecasts a decrease in wheat production in Ukraine to 19.5 million metric tons, down by 3.5 million from the previous year. Despite being a key agricultural producer, Ukraine faces challenges due to Russia’s actions, forcing exporters to seek new markets and routes.
The EU implemented a free trade agreement with Ukraine to support its economy, but subsequent import bans and border blockades led to clashes with European producers. Russia’s war further worsened the situation, with reports of Ukrainian resources being looted by Russia, impacting the global wheat market.
While Russia remains a major wheat exporter, its exports are expected to drop due to poor harvest conditions. The struggles of Ukrainian farmers, like Viacheslav Dydarenko, exemplify the challenges faced in regions like Sumy Oblast, impacting both local and global markets.
