Ukraine must ‘prevail’ for NATO membership – Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that Ukraine must emerge victorious in its conflict with Russia before it can be considered for membership in the alliance. Stoltenberg’s comments come ahead of the annual NATO summit in Washington where important announcements regarding military support for Ukraine are expected.

Despite Ukraine’s formal application to join NATO in 2022, the alliance has refrained from providing a clear timetable or roadmap for accession, citing the ongoing conflict with Russia as a barrier to membership. Ukrainian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina, continue to push for concrete steps towards joining NATO, along with guarantees of military aid and increased interoperability.

The White House has indicated that Ukraine will not receive an invitation to join NATO at the upcoming summit, focusing instead on showing support for Ukraine’s efforts in the conflict. Russia sees NATO expansion as a security threat and insists on Ukraine’s neutrality. As Ukraine navigates its path towards NATO membership, the geopolitical tensions in the region remain a contentious issue.
