Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) proposed an average eight per cent increase in public transport fares starting in 2025. The decision comes as the value-added tax on public transport services is set to rise from 10 to 14 per cent in September, leading to financial challenges for the authority.
Acting managing director Vesa Silfver highlighted the rising infrastructure costs due to ongoing projects like the depot in Ruskeasuo and Jokeri Light Rail. Despite pressure to raise fares by more than eight per cent, HSL believes this increase strikes a balance to maintain public transport uptake and avoid excessive strain on municipal contributions.
The proposal is part of HSL’s economic plan, with member municipalities having until the end of August to provide feedback. Board chairperson Matias Pajula expressed confidence in the likelihood of the hikes being implemented, noting that fare levels have fallen behind the consumer price index in recent years.
While the fare hike aims to address financial challenges, it is also crucial for maintaining the quality and sustainability of public transport services in the region.
