Armenian Prime Minister Faces Controversy Following Protest
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan defended police actions outside the parliament building, calling them commensurate. He accused the opposition of attempting to attack the legislative body. The day before, 101 citizens sought medical assistance after a protest, with 85 already discharged while 16 are still under observation.
Protests have been ongoing in Armenia since mid-April, with the latest movement named “Tavush in the Name of Motherland”. Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan led participants in marching to Yerevan, announcing impeachment proceedings against Pashinyan. The prime minister, who previously referred to the church as an agent of influence, faces increasing pressure from protesters.
Recent demonstrations saw police use light and noise grenades, resulting in a protester losing a hand. As tensions escalate, more protesters gather near Republic Square with additional police presence.
